Songbird
while listening to Fleetwood Mac’s “Songbird”
floats into my ears
as I work
as I sway my head
to the delicate emotional caring words
I close my eyes
as she sings over floating
piano keys and distant guitar:
I’ll love you like never before
I open my eyes
for a few minutes stop listening–
I couldn’t even hear what she said
six months ago
it would have broken my heart
again like it did after I broke the heart
of a rose
shattered in pieces
plucked all the feathers
from her vulnerable body--
how could I forget so easily?
but time has built a castle
again around my heart
I close my eyes again
not one of those fancy German stone castles
no
just a small stacked cubed green villa
in the volcanic hills of Santa Cruz de Tenerife
with the sun more present than the moon
with higo picos more present than roses:
and the songbirds are singing
like they know the score
the one that really gets me
is when the other bird starts singing:
and I wish you all the love in the world
but most of all I wish it from myself
