How To Tell If You Are Blind
step 1: try to look out of your eyes.
describe what you see. if you see only darkness
or a blanket sheet of white snow
then you are blind.
if you can see anything else, even if blurry,
move on to step two.
step 2: go to the eye doctor.
ask the eye doctor if you are blind
with your mouth and your words.
make sure you do this after the exam
not before. if the eye doctor says you are blind
then you are blind.
even if you can still see a little bit.
if the eye doctor does not say you are blind,
move on to step three.
step 3: ask somewhere on the internet.
go on to Google or Perplexity or even Chat GPT.
ask your questions there and do some light
research. if you can’t see the screen use a screen
reader. ask a friend to read you the results.
consider whether you were born in a cult
or were swept up in a cult.
look at the blindspots of your life,
the same ones you look at when you are changing
lanes while you are driving. if there are parts there
of your self that you cannot fully see,
then you are blind.
consider whether you are a man or a part of a new
generation of toxic masculinity. check to see
in which state you reside because you could be
in one of those states with explicit white nationalism
or implicit forms of racism that are built into the system.
look at the deed to your house and follow the trail
of money starting with your very own paycheck.
there are a million ways you can be blind
even if you think you can see out of the very orbs
in your very own eye sockets. ask your friends
to describe your self. pull down your pants and inspect
the objects that are littering the rooms of your residence.
stick your fingers down your throat and vomit up
all of the last few years and sort through the chunks
and determine whether there is anything you are not seeing.
then you will know if you are missing something.
then you will know if you have been painted into a scene
to which you didn’t even know you subscribed. in fact,
check the spam box in the email account of your life
and unsubscribe to any god damn thing that looks suspicious.
if you have done all of this and you are still not sure
whether you are blind (you are), you may move on to step four.
step 4: read Blindness by José Saramago.
