Before the Sunrise
the gray haze of the horizon
allows a streak or two of pink light
through the clouds.
this stabbing feeling I have in my heart
is just jealousy’s rust blade
stuck like an unforgettable Disney romance
planted as a wee child
too young to know poison from a flower.
I look out across the dull blue water
between two parallel skyscrapers
each outlined with three red lights
towering like lighthouses
looking for that red glowing ball
waiting for it to rise like your eyes
and look at me with warming love.
but my body tingles with this fear
that there will never be light again
that the darkness of the morning will just continue
endlessly as jealousy paints the clouds dull
making me fantasize about you
running off with these hotter monsters
as if the sun would suddenly wake up
one day and run off to a distant solar system
that could make it explode with ecstacy
to an extent I doubt I can provide.
the red unblinking lights
on the towers suddenly change
to flashing white lights
and that is a reminder
to me that I’m being silly
that the sun is coming up
that you will continue to love me
like you do every morning
that even if you do go off and explode
that you will come back
because this is the place
where you feel at home.
