Moon Over Divorce
Two souls-
the yolks of the human body-
who began by walking
side by side down city streets
through all four seasons,
formed a bond, were bound,
like two sunny side up eggs
frying in the pan: they hardened,
fused together;
the moon watched them, winking
shut and unwinking open, the two
souls, pooling their edges, forgetting
their boundaries, sizzling on the black
cast iron Earth, and sprinkled in emotion:
a dash of joy, a spoonful of sorrow.
But, eventually, as we all know,
it is time to eat
and the giant spatula of time
sets itself down, severs these two
souls, sometimes before they are ready,
and maroons them, separately,
each on their own island
of lox and caraway rye.
